Who are we???

Rob Stecher is the owner of Do It Right Diving. He has been diving recreationally for over 30 years and involved in public safety diving for over 20 years. He started the business to work with dive teams in the area to do their best and come home safely. Rob is a career firefighter for the City of Greenwood, is also a volunteer firefighter, as well as a rescue member of Indiana Task Force 1. During his career he has seen departments and teams struggle to maintain a safely functioning team in all aspects of technical rescue and is passionate about helping them improve. Seeing them succeed makes his day.

At Do It Right Diving we have the ability to assist your department or team with its goals in training. We have assembled a group of professional, proficient instructors that have spent many years on the job honing their skills. The experience they bring is invaluable to us and enables them to teach using lessons they have learned on the job.

We Promise to do everything in our power to teach teams the skills they need to accomplish the job and do so safely.

Chris Crail

Chris was born in Indiana, and for the last 21 years has been a member of Portage Fire Department, He is currently a Battalion Chief with the department. He has been a member of the Portage FD Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Team for most of those 21 years. He has risen from the low diver on the team to the team leader. He spends much of his free time working on his craft, both within the department and the dive team.

Brain Otto

Brian is born and raised in Chicago. He recently retired from Chicago Fire Department spending most of my career with the Air Sea Rescue division as a rescue diver and a dive training officer. His philosophy is always, chance favors the prepared which is why he fits in so well with Do It Right Diving. In his free time he enjoys recreational diving but somewhere warm, very warm.


John O'Neal

John is a 17 year veteran of the fire service. He currently serves as the Division Chief of Training and Safety for the Noblesville Fire Department, has served on NFD’s tactical rescue team since 2006 and is a rescue specialist on Indiana Task Force 1. He has been part of several water incidents resulting in rescue’s and recoveries. He is passionate about realistic training so teams can maximize operational effectiveness while managing risks.

Matt Wingler

Matt started diving at the age of 15 and comes with over 25 years of following his passion for dive. He enjoys working and training in fast-paced, dynamic environments that provide opportunities to share knowledge with others. Matt also has over 20 years of dedicated service in healthcare and public safety and is always looking for innovative ways to improve safety within the dive and water rescue community.

Luke Hurt

Luke has been in the fire service for 12 years, and currently works for Clarksville Fire Department as a firefighter in special operations providing hazmat, swift water rescue, technical rescue and dive operations. He is also Chief Officer at his volunteer department where he began his firefighter career years ago. He wants to leave the fire service better than when he found it and to do that we need to train and spread each other's knowledge and experience as much as possible.

Dave Thompson

Chief Thompson is a 24-year veteran of the Indiana fire service beginning as a volunteer firefighter and rising through the ranks to Fire Chief of Elizabethtown, In. Prior to beginning his fire service career in 2010, serving Columbus Township Fire & Rescue where he once again began to rise through the ranks and for the last six years has served as Fire Chief. Chief Thompson has served as an EMT, Sherriff Deputy, Deputy Coroner; he has also been involved with numerous training and safety boards. Also he currently serves as the vice president of the Bartholomew county Chiefs association. He also holds several certifications in the fire service as well as Swift water, diving, also including boat and Air boat operations.

Zac Grunner

Born and raised in Trafalgar, Indiana. Zac joined the fire service in 2010 and found a passion for the special operations side of things. He is a certified technician in rope, swift-water, hazmat. in 2016 he started diving and in 2019 competed the Indy Public Safety Dive School. He is always eager to learn and pass on his knowledge to others.

Jacob Harshey

Jacob has been in the fire service since 2008. He has been part of both the volunteer fire department as well as a career firefighter since 2013. He has serviced as a Lt. and Training Officer for his departments. His passion is teaching the newer members around him. He is also a Special Ops Medic where he provides coverage for local sporting events as well as PIT road medical for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He is also a Swat Medic for multiple local and federal teams.

Cody Painter

Cody started his public safety diving career in 2012 with the Union Township Fire Department. With the support of several agencies, their dive team would become the only joint law enforcement & fire service team in Central Indiana. As the department evolved, it would reform as the East Madison Fire Territory, providing water rescue services to an area 450+ sq. mi. Cody has been the appointed Water Rescue Team Commander for the last 6 years. He is also a staff member of Do It Right Diving located near Indianapolis.

Cody has a law enforcement background and serves as a Training Coordinator & Investigator with the Chesterfield Police Department. He is an Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board Instructor who specializes in use-of-force. Cody has earned certifications as a Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue Technician, SDI Divemaster, and ERDI Supervisor. In addition, he is a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to the Defense Coordinating Element, Region 5.
